JUSTUS COMMUNITY HISTORY

Submitted by Scott County, Indiana Historical Society Historian, Thelma Shepherd Hogue.

Justus had a little post office that sat next to Highway 362, east of Nabb, on the Scott County side (north) of the highway. The location is east of Barnes Cemetery on top of the hill and across from the Kettle Bottom Road. Will Smith was Postmaster and married Etta Shepherd. They had a daughter Ada.

Dr. Carl Bogardus recorded that Jestus was established 7 March 1894 with Wilmer J. Smith as the first postmaster, and discontinued on 30 November 1899.

March 2, 2012, a F-4 Tornado did a lot of damage to the area plus killed one man, Christianus Marinus Govers, age 72.

More information will follow when located.
